Description: Painting pictures
with words: that is just what we mean by "picturesque" language. "Sounds good," you say, "but how do I do that?" To get started, scroll down for a few examples and a couple of exercises to get you thinking.
Examples:
search.php check out some phrases, similes and metaphors (remember them from high school English class? You can search our Gem Mine for them by choosing them under type and leaving the theme area blank.
Descriptive words to get you started:
"smart card"
"bubblicious gum"
"swing lock report cover"
"ambient temperature"
"as dark as ebony"
"voluminous file"
"braying neighbor"
"incandescent idea".
While any specifically descriptive adjective works well, often, the most effective phrases come from combining an item with a word which normally describes something else...as we did with braying neighbor, for instance.
Descriptive Classics
Now let's look at some classic examples of painting word pictures:
"All that glisters is not gold."
William Shakespeare...and, no, that is not a typo. Look it up, "glister" is really what he said.
"Experience is the child of the thought,
and thought is the child of action. "
British Prime Minister Disraeli

Now it's your turn. Exercise: Use three words to describe (in non profane terms) a computer program that isn't working. Is it:

- "irritating",
- "exasperating",
- "diabolical",
- "intimidating"?
Or, is it - a "mega-monster",
- "an
abyss",
- "a conspiracy",
- "a chameleon",
- "a black hole"?
You can probably think of a dozen other words to add to this long list.
Now describe your efforts on your last project.
Were they
- "intensive",
- "mind-boggling",
- "investigative",

- "professional,"
- "far-reaching",
- "dreary",or,
- "team building"?
Remember that when you report on projects, you want to provide as much input as possible to those who make the decisions affecting your next project. Descriptive language will influence their actions. 
Now that we have you thinking, remember to practise the technique. Every day offers you chances to comment on things as diverse as the weather, your sports team, the latest technology or a relationship. Soon, painting word pictures will become a regular part of your conversation, and, your presentations.
